The intent and purpose of sharing this science-based information is to provide much-needed insight into the power of food to provide healing potentials for many chronic diseases; it is offered for educational purposes. Please note that many of the suggestions are offered to help minimize the toxic effects "foods" have on the intestinal lining and the gut Microbiome. Question: "What is the #1 ingredient in creating a healthy Microbiome?" Answer: Commitment Joseph B. Clifford, D.C.
Improving Overall Health, by Eating Consciously and Healing your Gut

The following suggestions are based upon science-based research, within which dietary and lifestyle choices are related to excess weight-gain, disease, digestive disorders, and other inflammatory processes. To many folks, these changes, primarily created with whole-food, plant-based food choices (eating real food), may seem overwhelming. However, may I suggest also that everyone take steps to make these transitions plausible, so he/she may develop a feeling of empowerment and not imminent doom or failure. I also realize that not everyone will desire to choose all adaptations. Yet, making incremental, consistent changes can, over time, make significant differences. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." ~ Chinese Proverb
My hopes are that taking these powerful steps will help reduce the toxic and inflammatory effects of the Standard American Diet - also known as the SAD diet. May you discover your Power within, as you explore your own nutritional journey.

Healing the Gut and Other Disorders

Healing digestive issues, which frequently lead to inflammatory processes throughout the body (including the brain), can be drastically facilitated through eliminating the dietary choices that add "fuel" to the fires of disease.
A Few Important Terms: "Microbiome": The many trillions of bacteria and other microbes that inhabit within and upon our bodies (the greatest volume is within the intestine) affect all functions of our bodies, including the immune, glandular/ endocrine, digestive, and nervous systems. "GMOs/Genetically modified organisms": Plants are genetically manipulated by chemical companies, such as Monsanto, Dow, Corning, etc., to tolerate increased amounts of chemicals for theoretically controlling insects and weeds (while boosting their financial "bottomlines"). These hideous chemicals are extremely toxic to the consumer and to the environment. Sadly enough, the U.S. Government and its agencies impose very little or no regulation upon these Companies or their chemicals. "Organic": Foods labeled as such have restrictions placed upon the Organic industries that prohibit the use of GMOs and chemicals within the growth of crops and production of  foods. These foods are cleaner and much healthier to eat, both for our gut microbes and for us, while these farming choices help to preserve our World and its environment. The "Standard American Diet (SAD)": Typically, these foods are laden with processed ingredients, chemicals, processed sugars and carbohydrates, unhealthy fats (processed vegetable oils, animal and dairy fats), "fast foods", animal by-products (including their endogenous toxins, antibiotics, and growth hormones), and "junk foods" with high-calorie, low-nutrient value ingredients. These choices, made chronically, lead to inflammatory illnesses, such as "leaky gut", diabetes, obesity, heart disease, elevated blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, cancer, and more.
Where to Start: If possible, eliminate GMO food stuffs (preferably, when available, shop for non-GMO). Choose Organic foods, primarily whole-food and plant-based (veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds). Minimize even organic junk foods, which frequently are filled with sugars, starches, and fats. Greatly reduce or eliminate gluten - if wheat is eaten, choose only organic (actually greatly reduce wheat, which, by the nature of its molecular structure, injures the lining of the intestine). Research indicates that gluten (a wheat protein) injures, to some degree, everyone's intestinal lining, even though a consumer may not react highly and sensitively to it. Please Note: Typically grown, non-organic, wheat is repeatedly sprayed (up to 10 times) with Roundup, Monsanto's herbicide (truly a "biocide", which kills all life, including animals, insects (such as our pollinators), organisms in the dirt and within the human gut. The World Health Organization suggests that Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is a carcinogen; even though Monsanto claims it is only an antibiotic. Roundup toxins create inflammation and conditions from the gut to the brain.
May I offer more healthy choices? Eliminate artificial food dyes in foods and drink (“sport drinks”). Artificial dyes are particularly hazardous to children and their brains' health. Eliminate high-fructose corn syrups/ sugars. This chemically modified sugar gravely affects the liver and can lead to diabetes 2, general inflammation, fatty live disease, and obesity. Each of these is gravely growing in our nation's children. Greatly reduce processed sugars (e.g.. table sugar--sucrose) and foods that contain them. Greatly reduce/eliminate Fast Foods, which are usually filled with excess sugars/starches and salt, unhealthy fats (Trans fats), chemicals, flavor enhancers, and usually non-organic ingredients. Eliminate artificial sweeteners, which have been found to create more diabetes and obesity than table sugar (sucrose). Minimize /eliminate processed foods; which usually are made with excess sugar, salt, unhealthy oils/fats, and other flavor enhancers (probably chemicals). Greatly reduce intake of meats (heavy proteins) and dairy, which are inflammatory and acidifying (particularly when cooked at high temperatures). They frequently contain growth hormones and antibiotics (which lead to death of a healthy Microbiota), and stored environmental toxins. Excessively drinking alcohol greatly reduces (sanitizes) the wide spectrum within the varieties of microbes, which would support our lives' functions; thus it should be greatly reduced. Drinking in excess also creates fatty liver disease. I suggest purchasing a quality water filter (reverse osmosis, carbon), rather than drinking unhealthy municipal water or bottled water in plastic bottles (with Bisphenol A or B). What can you do? A good place to begin is to start making simple, healthier food choices.
